How to achieve deep, healthy levels of mind by Juan R. Silva    When you practice the Silva Long Relaxation Exercise (also known as the Silva Centering Exercise), there are three things you need to do while you close your eyes. Far from going into a nice relaxed position, and listening to a beautiful voice of the instructor, rambling on through a conditioning exercise, you must go to work. You must activate yourself. After all, that's where we originated our "Dynamic Meditation" model. We want you to do three basic things while you are listening to this exercise, to the Long Relax: First, you should practice your concentration. Concentration is basic. It is the fundamental of imagination and everything else. If you don't have the ability to concentrate, it is hard for you to do anything else. You should concentrate before you do anything else. Second, you should practice your imagination. We want you to exaggerate. We want you to learn how to exaggerate your imagination, because we feel you will be in a better position to control your programming. In enhancing your imagination, you'll be able to better program yourself, for programming to be more effective. At the same time, it will maintain you active while going through the exercise. We don't want you to close your eyes and go into a hypnoidal condition where you are locked in to the process in a sort of hypnoidal sleep. Students sometimes do that because of a lack of experience in doing the relaxation exercise. It is natural for every one of us to fall into a hypnoidal trance. By being mentally active, you avoid this to a big extent. You also avoid what often happen when students tell us, “I lost your voice, how come I didn't hear you.” Of course that happens, because the mind wanders. This is another reason you should practice your concentration, and practice exaggerating your imagination - because you maintain yourself active right there, with what you are doing. At the same time remember, this has to do with acquiring all these levels with conscious awareness. We must maintain our consciousness as much as we possibly can. I'm not saying that we won't go to sleep here and there off and on. We will. But not for too long a period  time. We'll be in much better control of that. The third thing you must practice is to coordinate the physiological relaxation with the mental relaxation. It is easy to go into a mental relaxation. It only takes about two or three seconds once you acquire the proficiency. But you see, you leave your body behind. This is also true for people who might have taken the course four or five years ago. Yet when they do the Silva Centering Exercise, you can see in their body language - that their body is still erect - it is as if this is the first time they ever closed their eyes and went through the relaxation exercise. That means that they have not practiced. They have not acquired the ability to relax properly. Remember that we are a body-mind entity. We are not a body and a mind. We must relax the body and mind simultaneously. It takes a little longer for you to relax your body than it does for you to relax your mind. And in your body, there are tissues that relax before others do. The tissues that are most sensitive relax quickly. It takes a little practice. Nevertheless, you start incorporating this physiological relaxation with the mental relaxation.
How to Practice How do we do this? Here's how: In the Silva Centering Exercise, when the instructor says to project - or concentrate -your sense of awareness on your scalp area, that's where you start practicing your concentration. What are you going to do with these instructions? How are you going to carry these instructions out? You start concentrating...how are you going to do it? I've got to project my awareness to my scalp area...what's my awareness? Establish what your awareness is. It is not a jet, it is not a book. Let's say...it's a ray of light...the purest light there is, the purest energy there is. Assume that it is. It is easier for us to focus a ray of light into that area than anything else, so why not establish that your awareness is a ray of light. That's where you concentrate on how you're going to carry out the instructions. Next you are instructed to detect the vibrations in that area, the feeling of warmth caused by circulation...of course it is the blood circulation we are talking about. If you don't concentrate on trying to feel the pulsations of those vibrations in that area, you'll never feel them. It doesn't mean you are going to feel them on the first effort, no. But by the second or third effort, you will start feeling them. But you must take time, allow time for it. That's where your concentration comes in. Now you know that this feeling is caused by the blood circulation, so why don't you exaggerate your imagination. That's where your imagination comes in. Imagine that there is a strong beam of light into that area, into a big chamber where there is blood circulating there, nice pure blood. Exaggerate that. Imagine it irrigating all the roots of your hair, things like that. Here's where you practice your imagination. Then you are instructed to release and completely relax all tensions and ligament pressures from this part of your body. Don't just recite it; concentrate on it, exaggerate your imagination again. How would you imagine your scalp being fully relaxed. Think. Concentrate. Maybe you would feel better imagining your scalp as if it were dropped all over, like...melting all over. Whatever it is, try that. Maybe it would feel like a warm, wet cloth over your head. Whatever it is, help your body. This is where you use your imagination. And this is where you start incorporating your physiological relaxation with your mind, with your mental relaxation. This is very important. What's going to happen when you do that? You will be much more relaxed at the end of that exercise than if you hadn't done that work. You will acquire a much deeper level of conscious awareness, to its fullest extent, because you've been busy. You will have also learned how to handle your imagination a lot better than you did before. You'll have learned how to concentrate better. It means also that you are going to acquire a deeper level, sooner, with conscious awareness. You are going to relax your tissues much faster, with conscious awareness. Remember that your brain is composed of tissues also, and your brain controls everything. It controls your motor system, your nervous system, your sensory system, your memory system...everything. It's you...your brain. And it is a lower frequency, brain level, with conscious awareness, that will accept or reject your programming. It will accept or reject, because it still has a consciousness, a consciousness that still doesn't cease to be a censorship department. It may err at lot, but it is still a censorship department.
The Importance of Continued Practice The Long Relaxation Exercise serves as a basic reference for your bodily relaxation in every part of your body. You set the points of reference at that time. However, the first time we did it at the beginning of the coursework, so many of us were so insecure when we first started - we weren't too sure whether we belonged in the class or whether we should be taking the coursework - and our mind was wandering - in other words, we were not wholly and totally committed to cooperating. So before we realized it, half of the Silva Centering Exercise went by without our totally getting into it. Consequently, the points of reference that should have been established during the first half of the exercise were not established firmly, so it would do us the most good. When we did decide to actually join the instructor in relaxing, it was our first effort, and we didn't have any knowledge of how to relax our body and mind, of course. As a result, people who have only gone through the Silva Centering Exercise one time, do not know how to relax completely. They must practice. Since we deal with dynamic meditation, when we close our eyes, we do everything but go to sleep. We do not depend on a lethargic state to relax and lower our brain wave frequency in order to benefit from bodily relaxation on to eliminate stress. It must be dynamically done...mentally...it must be mentally dynamically done. What I mean is, we close our eyes and go to work. We go to work using our imagination, our visualization. We can use one or use the other. We have to do this because we must achieve these lower levels with conscious awareness. We cannot just go to the lower levels and allow our mental state to be altered. Do you know why? Because, that's what we attribute our success to: Converting the sub- conscious into an inner-conscious level.
Correcting Problems This is why we have accomplished what the psychiatrists and psychologists have not been able to accomplish. When a person has a trauma, the psychoanalysts and psychiatrist go after it, one way or another: electrical shock or drugs or whatever. When you are able to bring down your brain wave frequency to where they think that they trauma was established, with the hopes that if it is divulged, then the cure can come about. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. The people who come to our course, it is so important to them...what they hold inside of them...that they are willing to lie about the whole thing. They lie about why they are there. They invariably say that they are there because of their sister, because of their uncle, because of their aunt, or whatever. But they are in need of help, not their relative. Now if it is so important that they lie about it, you can imagine just how they feel about what ails them. This is what you call a great desire to be helped. We have this great desire right in front of us. What would happen if we hypnotized this person, put them into a lethargic state? We would alter this emotional factor, and we would cease to have the desire; it would be altered, period. We don't want that to be altered. We want it the way it is. We don't want to transmit that particular sensation to an ideal level for programming, an ideal level of brain wave frequency, but still with conscious awareness. In order to do this, we have to do it dynamically. We have to do it with conscious awareness. We have to do it by using our imagination, our visualization, and be able to bring down the brain wave frequency to around 10, 12, or 13 cycles per second. Remember that the brain is made up of tissues also. These tissues are able to obey any instructions of yours to a "T" under hypnotic state, in a lethargic state, and much more so when they are conscious. So you know that they are going to obey to a "T" everything that you are going to tell them to do. So this is why, once we transmit this slowly, this particular emotional value, which is so important - see, nobody knows how much this hurts this person. Their father or mother couldn't begin to tell them how much it hurts. Only they know. So you know how important it is. And now you know what it mens then in the course of achieving these low brain wave frequency levels. When we do, we are able to ventilate other impediments that were already registered in your brain. Now they are working with a lot less friction. Now they are able to enhance these particular emotions to where, if it was so much of a desire, now it is intensified, because there is less friction that surrounds it. It has been allowed to expand, shall we say. The moment that we get down to the ideal level for programming, and go ahead and relieve the programming for that particular emotion of their's - the need to get well - you know that the brain immediately is going to order the correct distribution of body chemistry to rectify any abnormalities - mental or physical - that may exist. In other words, it is going to allow an interruption of the present pattern that is taking place, and allow nature to take its course. And the only course that nature can take is to normalize things. That's to cure, of course. Now if on top of that we apply a strong programming at a particular ideal brain wave frequency level of programming, this is where biological remission occurs. See how important it is to do more than close their eyes, sit back and listen. They are supposed to close their eyes, sit back, and start imagining, visualizing, working. This is why it is important that the Long Relax is going to establish points of reference throughout your body. And any other points of reference that you are going to establish that you have need of. That's why visualization and imagination must be exaggerated while going through the exercise. If you are going to relax your scalp, what would be an exaggerated, imaginative way of relaxing your scalp? Well, let's just imagine that it droops right over your eyes and everything, as though something was melting. Then you droop your shoulders, droop your head - help your body. Exaggerate your imagination, in an infantile manner.
The Best Way to Practice The best way to practice the Long Relax, to help you establish a very deep level where you can correct more problems and achieve more goals is as follows: Memorize the Silva Centering Exercise. Memorize it however you can, with a recording, or a script perhaps. It doesn’t have to be word by word. It is repetitive, so it is easy to memorize. But it doesn’t have to be word by word, just the context of the exercise. This is very important because you are involving your emotion. When this happens, you are putting in the greatest desire to get well that can be used. In searching for the correct phrase, it works a lot better, because of your intent, because of your involvement. Practice as I have described above, with your concentration and imagination, and you will be very successful with it. (This was transcribed from interviews with Juan Silva.)

Because, that's what we attribute our success to: Converting the sub-conscious into an inner- conscious level.
