“So that when we move on, we shall have left behind a better world”
Benefits of Intuition
Dealing with Disabilities by William R. "Bill" Sturdevant UltraMind ESP System Instructor Bill is an award-winning Silva instructor who began presenting Jose Silva's mind training system in Alaska in 1984. Be sure to check out his new home study course: Jose Silva's UltraMind ESP Systems Self-Management System. There are several ways the Silva techniques can help persons with disabilities. I know of many people who have used them very effectively...including myself. First, the techniques help the individual in coping with the situation. Some people grow bitter when they are hit with a serious problem, but that doesn't help in any way. When we improve our own attitude about the situation, this has enormous benefits. There is less stress on the person with the disability, and they have much more energy they can use to cope and deal with life. At level, you can come up with more ideas for circumventing the disability, for living life in as normal a way as possible. Here is an example of how the techniques can help: One man who is experiencing "post polio syndrome" told me that he had quite a revelation at level one day. "I realized that the reason I have so much knowledge and information is that when I was a kid, my activities were so restricted while I recovered from the polio that I spent a great deal of time reading. I read books, magazines, newspapers, anything I could find. "Now the limitations I am experiencing at this time have caused me to go back to using my mind more, since I cannot use my body as much. I realized at my level that the very thing that gave me the knowledge I have today, is now directing...actually forcing...me to put that knowledge to use in a productive manner. "I would not be doing this if it were not for the new disabilities that I now have. I'd still be running around doing lots of different things, instead of using my knowledge in a way that helps people, by writing, publishing information, making it available to people who can benefit from it. "Analyze your own situation at your level," he suggests. "You might be as surprised as I was at the idea that you get at the alpha level." He told me that he used Headache Control to deal with the pain, Awake Control to deal with the fatigue that accompanies the post polio syndrome. He also used the Three Fingers Technique to help deal with certain situation. He also uses the Mirror of the Mind of course. "I don't want to just mask symptoms," he said. "When using Headache Control to relieve pain, and Awake Control to relieve fatigue, I keep in mind that this is correcting the cause of the problem." We once asked Mr. Silva why the Headache Control Technique works the way it does. It appears that we are only treating the symptom - the pain - and not the underlying tension that causes the headache. Yet thousands of Silva grads have reported that when they used the technique, they stopped getting headaches, and no substitute symptoms ever showed up. Mr. Silva explained it this way: When you enter your level on your own - not guided by anyone else, such as a hypnotist or Silva instructor - and you do the programming yourself, then your brain and mind understand that you intend to correct the cause of the problem. Changing how people treat you One of the big problems for many people with disabilities is public attitude...the way other people deal with those of us who have disabilities. We know the cliché of people speaking louder when speaking to a blind person, for instance. People in wheel chairs feel more comfortable when the people they are talking with sit down, so that they are all on the same level. We can use the Silva techniques to help influence other people's attitudes towards us in several ways: You can use the 3-Scenes Technique to visualize and imagine people treating you the way you want to be treated. You can program yourself to help you do and say the right things. You can also program yourself to project the right attitude so that the other person "gets it." Also, very important, when you spend enough time at deep enough levels, and learn to cope with your own situation, learn to turn it into an advantage and change your inner attitude and your inner pictures, then you project this new positive "can-do" attitude instead of the "poor me" negative attitude, and this is much more pleasant to other people. A very good salesman once sold a subscription to the Chicago Tribune to a blind woman who lived alone. She told him that she couldn't read the paper, and that there was nobody to read it to her. "I hardly ever get any visitors," she sighed. He could hear her loneliness, and suggested to her that the fact that she couldn't read the paper herself was a great reason to subscribe: If she got this great big newspaper every day he suggested to her, and her friends knew that she subscribed to the newspaper and wanted to know what was in it, then they would have a reason to go and visit her...to read the stories to her. It turned out that this worked. If she had been able to read the newspaper herself, she would have continued to live alone and seldom had friends come to visit. But now, because she had the disability and could not read, people had a reason to visit her, which was something she desperately wanted. When the salesman called back six months later to see how she was doing, she thanked him because at least one of her friends would come by each day to read the newspaper to her. When you are projecting a negative attitude, one with bitterness, disappointment, helplessness, people are uncomfortable and do not want to be around you. When you have an attitude of optimism and joy, people love being around you. Some personal experiences The techniques are all highly adaptable. I encourage students to find new ways to use the techniques to help people (including themselves, of course), ways that the name of the technique might not suggest. Who would have thought that MS, symptoms could be corrected with the Habit Control Technique? Something told me to try it, and it helped my sister stop her choking problem, and to stop shaking her head, and to begin feeding herself again. Attitude is everything.  If I had had a "poor me” attitude, I have no question I would be dead now. When I was told by the neuro ophthalmologist that he thought I had MS, I didn't care; I was on my way to Laredo to become a Silva instructor, and I knew there was nothing I could not overcome with the techniques. I blew him away because I think he expected me to be devastated by the diagnosis, considering my sister's situation. Positive statements helped me a lot when I was correcting my eyesight. I had a whole sequence of beneficial statements I went through, at least three times a day, every day, along with using my visualization and imagination to correct the problem. Silva is a program of "Mind Control." Doing something physical is not "cheating.” I encourage people to do things like massage or physical therapy or foot reflexology, or take herbs if that will truly help the condition, not just alleviate symptoms. I don't want people to become a lifetime subsidy for the pharmaceutical industry, but sometimes those things can help a person to concentrate on what they need to do for their healing. "Heaven helps those who help themselves.” And as Mr. Silva said, if you have a serious problem, throw everything at it that you've got. The more I study this field, the more I understand that Love is all there is. I once heard a doctor say that he had never seen a person with an autoimmune disease who loved him/herself. And I thought, "Yep, that's me.” So now, I also program to love myself more. You have to love yourself enough to want to do the programming. You have to love yourself enough to believe that you are worthy of good health. And of course, the more you love yourself, the more you can love others and help them. Finally, I have some caveats: First, there's the idea, "Be careful what you wish for; you might get it,” which is how I got MS. I wished I had it so I could show my sister it could be healed. Second, don't quit programming when you think you are "recovered.”  Keep up a "maintenance dose” of programming (minimum) to be sure that things keep going the way you want them to go. This can prevent a relapse. Third, "Okay” sucks. I'd look at my sister's condition and think, "I'm not that bad yet - I'm doing okay.” It took me a long time to realize that I wasn't, and that "okay” isn't.
